Ideally it is best to get a variety of pictures with some smiling and some serious. But here are a few tips on how to get the best smiles in pictures.
Show Teeth: A good majority of people don't like to show teeth. If you notice the subject looks better with teeth showing then make sure and tell them to "show teeth". Simple enough right?
Natural Smiles: Most of all make sure smiles look natural. Simply saying 1#0,2#3 won't cut it and will lead to a dull smile. Get people to smile from their eyes by connecting with them. Get your subject to start talking about themselves a little and get to know them in between shots. Make sure they are comfortable, and that doesn't mean telling them to be comfortable. Be non obtrusive and nonchalant and be relaxed. If you as the photographer is relaxed so will your subject.
Good Lips: Add a sparkle to the picture with moisten lips. Nobody likes chapped lips in pictures. This goes for goes and girls, but girls will likely have more options.
Got wrinkles? Use Flash: Some people have deep laugh lines or furrows when they smile. These are often exaggerated by the camera. The best way to lesson these lines is with a fill-light or on camera flash. Another way is to just have the subject not smile so big.
Chin Positioning Makes a Difference: Sometimes when people smile they move their head down too much making them look like they lack confidence, or raise their chin in the air giving a stuck up look. Help the subject position their chin to give a confident yet soft look. Make sure the position of the subjects chin compliments their smile.
Is Laughing Good or Bad? Most of the time when people laugh they squint their eyes and have an exaggerated smile. It's a good idea to make your subject laugh to lighten the situation and to capture them in a good mood. But you are more likely to get a good shot after they stop laughing then while they are laughing. Wait for a second when they laugh and take the picture right after.
Compliment: To produce natural smiles it is a good idea to praise the person you are taking a picture of. Be aware of your subject as their are a few people out their who are uncomfortable when being complimented. It is a good idea to tell them how good the pictures are looking Mike Edwards Kids Jersey , that they are photogenic, that they have a great smile, that they smile from their eyes, or that they have the perfect outfit for the pictures.
