Jason Spezza is gone, so the Ottawa Senators needed a top centre. David Legwand needed a home a few days into free agency. On Friday the Senators went about the process of replacing Spezza by signing Legwand to a US$6-million, two-year contract. The 33-year-old cited filling that spot and playing for coach Paul MacLean as the reasons he chose Ottawa over some other teams. Legwand does know hes not a Spezza clone and wont try to be. "Obviously what Jason Spezza did in Ottawa was pretty remarkable," Legwand said on a conference call. "Hes a point-a-game guy and a very rare offensive talent. I dont think youre going to fill his shoes, but I think you can go in there, do some things and maybe help the all-around game." Legwand played more than 900 NHL games over 15 seasons with the Nashville Predators before being traded at the deadline to the Detroit Red Wings. He had 51 points (14 goals and 37 assists) in 83 games in 2014-15, and 577 points in his career. Spezza had 23 goals and 43 assists for 66 points in his only season as Senators captain. He asked for a trade and got his wish Tuesday with a trade to the Dallas Stars for right-winger Alex Chiasson, two prospects and a draft pick. Legwand, who will count $3 million against the salary cap each season and make $2.5 million in the first year and then $3.5 million in the second, expects to fill in as the Senators second-line centre behind Kyle Turris. In a statement announcing the signing, general manager Bryan Murray didnt promise that but complimented the different things Legwand can do. "David is a good, veteran centre, a guy that skates pretty well, gets up and down the ice," Murray said. "We just think the way things shook out for us that having an experienced centre that can be a decent faceoff man, be a good defensive player, get points, was very important at this time." Legwand, a Detroit native, reportedly drew interest from the Toronto Maple Leafs and others. MacLean made a difference in his decision-making. "I just think hes a great hockey person," Legwand said. "He obviously won the coach of the year for a reason, and I think playing against him in Detroit I think he had a lot to do with a lot of their success there." MacLean was the Jack Adams Award winner in 2013 when the Senators overcame injuries to Spezza, defenceman Erik Karlsson and goaltender Craig Anderson to make the playoffs. They missed this past year after Daniel Alfredsson left to sign with the Red Wings. Legwand believes the Senators, with Milan Michalek back on a $12-million, three-year contract, Bobby Ryan, Turris and Karlsson leading the offence, can contend for a playoff spot next season. "Thats got to be your goal is to get into the dance," Legwand said. "If you get in you never know what can happen." Also Friday the Senators signed restricted-free-agent defenceman Eric Gryba to a $2.5-million, two-year deal. Hell count $1.25 million against the cap each year, making $1.2 million next season and $1.3 million after that. Gryba, 26, had 11 points (2-9) in 57 games last season. The Senators might not be done making moves, as Murray reiterated he was continuing to discuss a trade and added, "its just a matter of if we can get satisfaction both ways." "We probably will do something else but I do feel comfortable with the roster," Murray said. "I think that if we have to add we will, but it looks like our young players that have been drafted by the organization and have developed within -- weve got a couple of guys that are ready and if they get a chance Im sure theyll perform very well." There have been reports that Ottawa has had discussions with the Philadelphia Flyers about veteran forward Vincent Lecavalier. Fridays signing reduces the likelihood of that, unless Lecavalier plays the wing or Legwand centres the third line. Clearance Nike Shoes . Is Odell Beckham getting too much hype over his big week and even bigger catch, or can he be a top-end fantasy WR the rest of the way? Cullen: Hes not being under-hyped, thats for sure, because a spectacular catch during a national game is going to catch attention, but the spectacular nature of the catch shouldnt detract from the real value that Beckham has as a receiver. In the past four weeks, hes been targeted 44 times, making 31 catches for 503 yards and a couple of touchdowns. It may be unlikely that he keeps that lofty pace but, particularly with the Giants facing a soft schedule coming up (Jacksonville, Tennessee, Washington), Beckham should be a high-end option at wide receiver. Congratulations to all those who plucked him off the waiver wire. Fisher: Any receiver that can make a catch like that (reportedly) on a regular basis in practice, dating back to college, is worth a lot of hype. He’s not a top-end WR yet, prior to his huge Week 12 Beckham was performing more like a high-end WR2, but he will be. With his breakout performance, Beckham joins the cast of several rookie receivers who deserve to be keepers in such leagues. Hetherington: Beckham is getting a lot of attention, but deservedly so, his performance on Sunday night was nothing short of spectacular. Im not sure top-end is the right category, but I see Beckham being every-week safe WR2 for the remainder of the season. Much like fellow rookie Kelvin Benjamin, Beckham is the lone threat at wide receiver on his team. Therefore, targets are a guarantee and - as long as its in his wingspan - Beckham will catch any ball thrown his way. CJ Anderson finally looks like the back we expected from the Broncos offence. Can he be trusted more than Montee Ball or Ronnie Hillman for sustained success? Cullen: Third in line for the Broncos running game, after Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman, Anderson has been really productive over the past three weeks, gaining 473 yards from scrimmage with a couple touchdowns on 65 touches in the past three weeks. He seems to be a good fit for the Broncos because hes a viable threat as a receiver and while hes likely to face challenges for playing time from Juwan Thompson or if the others get healthy,, Anderson is a good choice right now, a productive starting running back on a premier offence.dddddddddddd Fisher: I’m of the opinion that big fantasy numbers out of the Broncos’ backfield should be expected, not just hoped for. Anderson’s finally doing the position justice, which is more an indictment of Ball and Hillman than it is a compliment to Anderson. Still, Anderson is doing what any running back in Denver should do – putting up points in bunches – and he should continue that relatively easy feat all season. Hetherington: Im beginning to think the Broncos backfield cursed. Every time a back seems to emerge, he goes down with injury. Im going to take a guess and say the third times the charm for the Broncos at running back and Andersons the guy that can finally stay healthy. As long as he does, Anderson is a RB1 in an offence that scores points in bunches. Limiting Andersons long-term outlook, however, is the eventual returns of Ball and Hillman. Though those may not come until after the fantasy season. The Redskins are starting Colt McCoy. Should fantasy players be doing the same? Cullen: Are we talking two or three-quarterback leagues here? McCoy has been great in his two appearances this year (36-for-42, 427 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT), but I would have to be in a completely desperate situation to put my fantasy hopes on McCoy. This seasons results notwithstanding, I would need to see a bunch more before starting McCoy this late in the season. Just because the Redskins are doing it doesnt mean every fantasy owner should behave so recklessly. Fisher: McCoy has one good game on film and the fantasy scoreboard, and a whole lot of bad ones from his time in Cleveland. Owners of RG3, if there are any left patient enough to endure through his struggles, can find much better replacements on the waiver wire than McCoy. Hetherington: McCoy would be an extreme reach of a start this week. Colt did a good job of moving the offence in his two outings with the Redskins earlier this year, but expecting more than one touchdown from him is a stretch. I dont even see McCoy on the QB2 radar this week, though he may have the opportunity to rack up fantasy points in garbage time if the Colts run up the score early. With the way the Redskins have played as a whole, I cant see McCoy playing the savior for the struggling team. ' ' '
